4 Ways To Help You Deal With Loose Skin After Weight Loss

When it comes to losing weight we all have this image that once we lose the desired amount of weight our bodies will miraculously look perfect; tight skin, toned abs and muscles.

To our surprise, one of the biggest problems that arise after losing a lot of weight is that your skin becomes loose and flabby. When you gain weight, the skin stretches to accommodate the extra weight, but unfortunately, when you lose weight it’s not that easy. Skin does not naturally snap back when you lose a lot of weight, more often than not leaving you with excess loose skin.

How elastic your skin is and how loose it will get after weight loss depends on a few things; the amount of weight lost, the time in which you’ve lost the weight and your age during the weight loss period.

If you’re trying to tighten loose skin, after major weight loss, you need to know that there is no magic cream, no pill, and no treatment that will magically snap your skin back. There are a few options and a few things you can do to help you tighten your skin naturally…

 

Don’t lose weight too quickly
If you lose a big amount of weight in a short period of time, you don’t give your skin time to tighten and thus you end up with loose skin. This is the problem with crash diets; they leave you with loose skin. Losing weight in a healthy and steady manner over a period of time minimizes your risk of ending up with loose skin.

 

Drink a lot of water
Drinking a lot of water helps skin look better and become tighter. Staying well hydrated helps skin become more elastic, making it easier for the skin to snap back when some weight is lost. A minimum of 6 glasses a day is enough to keep the body hydrated, but drinking more than that is also recommended.

 

Eat for better skin
Two key ingredients to keeping skin elastic are collagen and elastin. It’s important to constantly provide the body with these two ingredients, to keep your skin elastic and make it easier for it to snap back after weight loss. Collagen and elastin can be found in red fruits and vegetables, carrots, beans, seeds, nuts, and fish.

 

Strength Training & Weight Lifting

Building muscle can help your skin tighten. If you don’t have too much loose skin it can help you get the shape you want. However, if you have too much loose skin, building muscles may not be enough to fill up space and tighten your skin.

Try to incorporate weight and strength training during your weight loss journey, to build muscle mass and minimize the risk of loose skin. Dieting and cardio alone, without any muscle maintaining or building, tend to result in loose skin.
