All About Sunscreens: Types, Brands, and Recommendations

You need to protect your body using SPF all year round, but it is especially important now as the summer and heat are fast approaching.

When making your choice of which SPF brand to go for, always look for a ‘broad full-spectrum’ SPF – one that protects from both UVA (they cause aging) and UVB (they burn your skin) rays. This way, you are reducing your skin cancer risk, preventing discoloration of your skin, and also preventing aging sun damage. You should be aware that SPF numbers do not tell you the whole story regarding how much protection you are getting. For example, SPF 15 blocks roughly 93% of all UVB, while SPF 30 blocks 97%, and SPF 50 blocks 98% – not as big a difference as you thought, right? The SPF rating is only a measure of UVB rays, not UVA.

There are two types of sunscreen protection products can offer you;

1. Physical Sunscreen: Ingredients such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide create a physical barrier between the sun and your skin.
2. Chemical Sunscreen: Chemical sunscreens contain compounds, such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate and avobenzone, which create a chemical reaction and work by changing UV rays into heat, then releasing that heat from the skin.

Always watch out for the ingredients above in your sunscreen to see which kind of protection you are getting. The best brands will usually have a mixture of both physical and chemical protection.
