So, if you follow me on Instagram you probably know I’m constantly sipping on water full of activated charcoal. Its an obsession of mine at the moment and it’s one I couldn’t recommend more. I add some to my water bottle and sip on it throughout my day, or add it to my lemon water first thing in the morning. I also love using a charcoal face wash around two times a week, I add it to my toothpaste, and I love a good charcoal face mask!
Activated Charcoal has been recognized as a detoxifying agent for the longest time. It isn’t new, but it definitely gained some attention across the wellness scene recently. Before I get to the benefits of this rising underdog, let me explain what it is first.
What is Activated Charcoal?
This isn’t the charcoal you’d use for your BBQ parties Cairenes!! Although all charcoal is essentially just burnt organic matter, Activated Charcoal is made using carbon that is combined with several gases and heated at very high temperatures. In simpler terms, the process gives the activated charcoal the power to act almost like a magnet attracting and absorbing all the toxins it can reach. It’s been used for years in hospitals for several different poisoning cases, as well as drug overdoses.
Now, it’s being regularly promoted as a substance you should add into your daily routine in order to eliminate the toxins that we are regularly exposed to whether through ingested foods, air pollution, or chemicals we are exposed to. That’s why you’ll find charcoal face masks, charcoal bath soaps, charcoal pills, and charcoal filled drinks all over the place.
- Helps kidney function because it filters out any unwanted toxins
- Can help reduce abdominal pain
- Can help with bloating which is why I personally drink it a lot
- It’s great for oral health because it’s anti-bacterial
- When it’s used externally it absorbs dust, dirt, and bacteria from the skin
Where to Get Activated Charcoal
- Activated Charcoal can be found in a powdered form here in Egypt at any ‘3attar’
- You can find Activated Charcoal pills at any pharmacy
- You can find charcoal infused beauty products in several places. I purchased the ones I personally use from Dr. Organic and Lush.
All in all, I personally find that it works really well for me. It helps me get rid of any toxins in my system. I find that very beneficial because I get physically affected by anything that could cause inflammation. I also find it great to reduce bloating.
However, you should always do your own research before trying anything new. I’m only sharing what I have personally learned from my own experience and reading. If you are on prescription medication you should consult your doctors because activated charcoal can reduce your body’s absorption of the medication.
