During the summer, our pores tend to open naturally thanks to the heat and humidity. Though, dilation of the pores is a healthy process that the skin undergoes in order to adjust to the rise in body temperature, this natural process has some disadvantages that are easily avoidable. Excessive sebum production (the oily substance that helps protect your skin) and sweat are two of the main disadvantages of pore dilation. The increase in the skin’s oil production may make the face look and feel very dewy, melting makeup easily in hot and humid conditions and also causing pores to clog. While some experience optimum oil production and stable pH levels in their skin, others with dry or oily skin tend to already over produce sebum leading to major inflammation, especially in summer months. Here are some simple tips to counteract the effects of our skin’s pores and oil when the temperatures are rising outside:

  • Stay cool. Drink plenty of fluids and lots of water, keep your hair up, wear breathable clothes – do any and all things that will keep your body temperature stable.
  • Use “Oil-free” products whenever possible, especially for cosmetics and moisturizers.
  • Always apply silicone-based primers after your moisturizer and before your foundation. Primers play a great role in creating a strong base for makeup, mattifying the face and keeping your makeup as long-lasting as possible.
  • Applying a matte oil-free moisturizer and SPF is a must.
  • Wash your face with a soap-free cleanser that won’t strip the skin of its natural, healthy oils.
  • Apply a honey and yogurt mask to help regulate the skin’s pH levels and cool skin down.
  • Washing away sweat regularly will prevent it from clogging pores.
  • Washing face with cold water will ensure tight, closed pores.
  • Eat an all-natural diet filled with fruits and vegetables.
  • Consume more potassium-rich foods like bananas to hydrate the body from the inside and help the skin produce less sebum.
  • Minimize your consumption of sodium-rich foods like fries and burgers which prevent the body from staying hydrated.
